Critics opinions:
Lacks the tension you expect from a mystery. The individual actors aregreat, but the chemistry herein lacks. Also, the storyline opens up toomany characters that it leaves undeveloped. It should cut the fodderand focus on one of the families.
The filming is too dark for much of the story. This becomesdistracting. I thought there was something wrong with the theater'sprojector. I understand this affect, but for it to work it should besubtle.
There are better true-event movies out there that resolve into a greatstory. There are better romance-gone-bad tales. There are better movieswith great scenery or sets. This is not one. Spend the evening watchingone of those.
Greetings again from the darkness. Who among us isn't intrigued by areal life "unsolved" murder mystery? Throw in a very wealthy New Yorkreal estate family, a never-discovered body, an executed friend, and ahorrible childhood trauma and it is certain to draw the attention offilmmaker Andrew Jarecki. Jarecki's film "Capturing the Friedmans" wonnumerous awards and is among the best documentaries ever made. He has aknack with dark family secrets.
In the film, Ryan Gosling plays David Marks, disenchanted son of RealEstate mogul Sanford Marks (a powerful Frank Langella), who witnessedthe grisly suicide of his mother when he was very young. David meetsthe energetic and affectionate Katie (Kirsten Dunst) and the twodreamers escape Daddy's clutches and head to Vermont to open a healthfood store. Finally wilting under pressure from Sanford, the couplereturns to the city and David joins the family business. The goodthings are soon to end.
Since much of the real life story is still a mystery, Jarecki does anice job in assembling pieces from the trial records. Along the way, wemeet David's friend Deborah Lehrman (Lilly Rabe), an acclaimed writerwho seems to always be there for David ... as he is for her. We witnessthe transformation of David from loving husband to mentally disturbedmurder suspect.
Jarecki gives us some guidance on what might have happened and how theplan could have been executed, but we'll never know for sure. What wedo know is that there was not much happiness associated with thisfamily, despite the wealth and 42nd Street real estate holdings.
The acting in the film is tremendous. Gosling, Dunst and Langella aretop notch. Yes, Ms. Dunst provides what is easily her best screenperformance ever. Support work from Lily Rabe, Phillip Baker Hall, NickOfferman and Kristen Wiig is all strong and believable. This one willgive you the creeps ... and rightly so.
I can't recall another film that got billed as a romantic mystery, somy curiosity was piqued just to see how All Good Things got to bepositioned as such. Written by Marcus Hinchey and Marc Smerling, thisfilm is inspired by the life of Robert Durst, an heir to a New Yorkreal estate magnate whose wife Kathleen McCormack disappears undermysterious circumstances, and is still missing as of today. Directed byAndrew Jarecki, without this chilling real life episode and background,it could just have been an ordinary film if not for the wonderful, engaging performance by leads Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst.
Set between the 70s and last decade in New York City, David Marks(Gosling) falls in love with a pretty working class girl Katie (Dunst),whose marriage and union is perfect on the surface, if not for theobjection of his real estate tycoon father Sanford Marks (FrankLangella) whose elitist status and snobbish behaviour brings about sometension as he frowns upon his son's lack of ambition and choice of wifefrom a lower social standing. I felt the story played out somewhat likeRevolutionary Road as we witness the disintegration of a beautifulrelationship, as slowly but surely David reveals a much darker side tohis being that in some instances will shock you as he dishes outunadulterated violence on his wife.
I suppose it's a different era then with the stigma of a divorce, onone hand Katie's separation allowed her to pursue her studies inmedical school, while on the other perhaps it was the money, whichnever once stood in the way to corrupt her affections for him, muchneeded now to fuel her lifestyle of drug addiction. Harbouring hopes tobear a child for the Marks family, this was keenly rejected by David, and pointing to the very first signs of trouble, as it keeps youguessing just how his traumatic witnessing of his mother's demise hadshaped his psychological well-being. Hints were dropped of course, andit's nothing short of chilling in Hitchcockian terms.
As with all real mysteries, this film can only suggest what could havehappened without being obtuse or definitive about it, with routinesplayed out that only formed speculation. Andrew Jarecki, better knownfor his superb documentary Capturing the Friedmans, almost played thisout in documentary fashion, as we catch glimpses of a much older Davidnarrating to lawyers just how events had unfolded, albeit sheddinglittle light on the atrocities that were committed, whether with hisinvolvement, or not. Gosling shines in the role here as he tackles thementally disturbed David sliding into a worsening condition, with thatnon- remorseful demeanour hiding a creepy secret that's primed for asurprise in the last act.
But between the two, Kirsten Dunst outshone Gosling. She launched hercareer starring opposite the likes of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt inInterview with a Vampire, and after arty fare like The Virgin Suicides, would probably be better known for her on-off relationship with JakeGyllenhaal then, and of course her role as Mary Jane Watson in theSpiderman blockbuster trilogy. She disappeared for a while to checkinto rehab for depression, and returns with what is arguably her bestperformance and role to date, playing the wide-eyed girl full of hopeand dreams to be married, but finding out in a snap that her beau isdefinitely not what he seems, plotting an escape that didn't quite goher way, and what more her character's mysterious disappearance whichtakes her out of the equation in the narrative.
It is the strong portrayals by the leading cast members that make AllGood Things compelling to sit through, with the thought that somethingsimilar had already happened, an open case without a resolution, andone of the mysteries that continue to remain unresolved.
Solid true crime story has the feel of real life to it in the mostimportant part--the details. Even when the plot makes a swerve towards"oh i can't believe that's what really happened for a second"territory--its the little details and short scenes that makes it feelstrue to life. (i'm thinking of the scene where Kristen dunst painfullymails this evidence indicting her husband to the senator only to havehim mail it back to her husband the next day--"this is familybusiness...and none of our affair", or the quick scene of Ryan goslingwriting his phone number on the boat "in case it gets lost", or theterse "Leave A Message" greeting on Gosling's hideaway's answeringmachine every time someone calls.) There are a lot of little thingslike that throughout that really make the movie pop.
Yes its true that the story is yet another one about an increasinglysociopaths rich guy--and the unraveling of his life as he gets more andmore paranoid, etc. We never really get to know why the main characterstarts to feel the way he does, beyond the standard he's upset thathe's being pushed into a lifestyle he didn't want and doesn't feel theleast bit appreciated by his dad bull crap. We don't ever know what'sgoing on inside the main character's mind and its to the film's creditthat it doesn't really try to generate any sympathy or likability onthe main character's behalf--even if the director and Gosling gives usa slight clue or two as to what might of shaped his current mania.(based largely on the should be coasting but somehow still excellentFrank Langella's treatment of Gosling, Gosling's witnessing of hismom's death at a very early age, and his overall shift in attitudetowards his life as portrayed by his non-verbal cues.) That the filmsucceeded in keeping my interest for its entire running time would be agood question to ask however. The two main performances are top-notchof course, you really get why both parties would be attracted to theother without ever really questioning it--you even get why Dunst wouldchoose to stay with Gosling even after the first bits of crazy startappearing, and there's a lot more where those first bits came from. Thefilm however is also very well directed--the pacing is perfect for thistype of film, (the film begins right with the meeting between Goslingand Dunst thankfully wasting zero time on filler material before theircourting) i've said before the small details that can make or break atrue story are pretty perfect here, the tone of the film--straight faceverging on very dry black comedy at times is very good too. When it wasover, I really felt like i hadn't wasted my time watching it and that iwas really absorbed by the story--however i could not quite place myfinger on WHY the film was made in the first place. It was a good storywith solid acting all around but the real question that you will wantto ask at the end of the film remains unanswered in real life too(which may in fact be the reason the film was made but its stillfrustrating to ask a question that remains completely unsolved even inthe true life story on which this is based.) This is however a solidfilm with a solid Ryan Gosling performance at the center that too fewpeople will see and will probably go unappreciated for many years untilsome writer or blogger exploring his filmography years from now triesto pulls it out from obscurity as a re-discovery or whatever. The realstory though really should be how Andrew Jarecki successfully made amore or less compelling feature film out of true life events.(something that too few documentary filmmakers actually manage to doeven a quarter as well when they try their hands at fictional films.)
Inspired by the most notorious missing person's case in New Yorkhistory, ALL GOOD THINGS is a love story and murder mystery set againstthe backdrop of a New York real estate dynasty in the 1980s.
well i saw this movie which is based on a true story of unsolved murdercase. its a drama thriller with romance of course. i was not expectingmuch from this movie when i saw it receiving not so good reviews. theonly reason of watching this movie was seeing these two actors, the hotand handsome Ryan Gosling and the beautiful and gorgeous Kristen Dunstafter a long time. well this movie turns out to be extremely Cliché.
Its so Cliché, i mean i felt i have seen movies like it before, storywas very Cliché. that thing does not effects me much for a moviebecause that is not the problem with me, i don't think that on certainplot if a movie is being made then there shouldn't be another one likeit. i always find some difference and some new things in it and even ifi mention it being Cliché, it doesn't effects the rating. but thismovie was pretty average.
its all that a girl (poor one) meets a very attractive handsome richman, falls in love then marry either way. things start to get littleweird and strange day bu day, girl star finding secrets about thefamily, that handsome looking guy actually turns out to be a psycho manand he always loose control and beat and torture his wife, sheseparates, then he kills her. it was pretty much like it. but the fewthings that makes it somewhat different is that its based on a truestory, the girl is actually missing not considered dead, which meansthe end. end of the movie is what makes it pretty different from othermovies like it.
movies starts somewhat slow, takes sometime to develop and theneverything just come rushing, everything start happening so fast whichis a negative point and it seriously annoys me. towards the end it hassome pretty shocking, mysterious and thrilling moments that are prettygood to watch. its actually a narrative movie, Ryan at his present oldage is shown saying the story to the Court.
acting wise pretty good i will say, its the only positive point, RyanGosling did a fantastic job again, he is very good in his character.towards the end his strange Woman get up and that psycho killer thingwas done very well by him. on the other hand Kristen Dust was awesometoo. she played her character pretty good.
screenplay of this movie is very dull and much in places pretty hollow, story is not narrated in a right way. movie is very empty and lost inplaces. i even didn't felt much connected to the characters as well.direction is pretty weak as well. so i will say to AVOID IT.
ALL GOOD THINGS CATCH IT (Only for Kirsten Dunst) ( B- ) All Goodthings has only One thing good and that's "Kirsten Dunst", she is theonly one who kept me glue to the movie and the moment she got lost, Ikind of lost too in my mind. Kirsten Dunst really put herself out therein the movie and I think it was her best performance till date. Herportrayal of the young lover, sweet wife & sister later on turn intoagonizing wife on drugs was simply startling. On the other hand RyanGosling was also very powerful in both young & old person but where helost me was his portrayal of a drag. At sometimes he looked the partbut most of the times it looked completely bogus. The movie has lots ofproblems from writing to direction & even to supporting cast. Whenevery supporting un-known cast/character shown on the screen, it seemedlike he/she is an important character though later on we even don't seeor hear from that character atall. The movie lost me completely themoment Kirsten Dunst vanishing off the screen, as the movie is basedupon a true story and Katie Marks (Original name: Kathleen McCormack)was never found after her disappearance. Though, the movie indicatedthat what had happened to her but it never fully fill out the gaps inthe case. Why David Marks (Original name: Robert Durst) was let go? Allthe incidents happening in the movie, like beating her up in front ofher family (which was incredibly weird because why her family didn'tstopped him), neighbors found Kirsten Dunst all beaten up and RyanGosling's mental schizophrenics state of mind etc etc were depicted inthe movie & those were never taken in consideration in the jury'sverdict plus why Ryan Gosling was never suspected in Kirsten Dunstdisappearance??? These are the questions which movie has failed toanswer; I think if the director & writers were not capable of joiningthe evidence, they should have not made a movie on an "unsolveddisappearance of Kathleen McCormack". Overall the movie is watchablebecause of its first 80 minutes (Kirsten Dunst) only and the last 30minutes of the movie are completely ridiculous.
