Despicable Me

Despicable Me poster

In a happy suburban neighborhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbors, hidden beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by a small army of minions, we discover Gru, planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon. (Yes, the moon!) Gru delights in all things wicked. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen: a potential Dad. The world's greatest villain has just met his greatest challenge: three little girls named Margo, Edith and Agnes.

Starring: Steve Carell (Gru (voice)), Jason Segel (Vector (voice)), Russell Brand (Dr. Nefario (voice)), Julie Andrews (Gru's Mom (voice)), Will Arnett (Mr. Perkins (voice)).

Critics opinions:

If you are a fan of animated movies, then this year is one of the bestyears of your life. "Despicable Me" is a movie that you can watch allover again without getting tired of it. It has many laughs, andmemorable characters. The only problem of this movie is that the storyis just simple but what makes this movie great besides the laughs isthe heart. It is cute, entertaining, and amusing. Non-Pixar animatedstudios has finally know how to make a great animated movie.

The story is just simple it's not bad it's just simple that makes themovie feel short and small. But the runtime and scale doesn't matter. The important ingredient of animated movies are the jokes. The jokeswere non-stop laughter especially the yellow minions. The charactersare crazy looking (except Gru's daughters). The music sounded likeJames Bond music. Steve Carrel's voice acting works for Gru but thebiggest prize goes to Russel Brand changing his voice for Dr. Nefario.

What makes "Despicable Me" special is the heart. The movie has plentyof heart and laughter. It's not the best animated movie of the yearthough. It's a nice adorable movie where both kids and adult will love. Will this be a classic? Almost.

In the CG animation, Despicable Me, a new villain has stolen the GreatPyramid of Giza. Not to be outdone, Gru (Steve Carell), a longtimevillain, hoping to uphold his own villainous reputation, plans an evenbigger heist—to steal the Earth's moon (with help of a Shrink Ray). Inorder to do so, he adopts three orphan girls, Margo Edith, and Agnes,to get them to steal the technology from a rival villain, Vector (JasonSegal). However, Gru and the kids start to develop a bond of sorts, which makes him rethink his plans.

When I saw this film, it was in 2-D, not the 3-D stereoscopic format,so I will not be able to comment on that particular format. The fluidanimation in this film is truly something amazing. This film prettymuch proves you can recreate in CG anything a 2-D cartoon is capable ofcreating (except maybe sketchy lines). The various odd, exaggeratedcharacters with stylized pointy noses, bulging eyes, and expressivemouths that inhabit this zany film are something straight out of TVcartoons-- they all flow, stretch, and exaggerate, all so veryorganically and naturally. Gone are the stiff-feeling 3-D stuff ofyesteryear. The physically impossible feels physically possible becauseit's so solid-looking. I miss traditional 2-D animation already.

I found this film pleasantly charming, cute, diabolically clever, andheartwarming. Admittedly, it is more joke-heavy than plot-heavy. Onecan easily guess where the story is going and while there areoccasional revelations about the characters' past, it doesn't divergemuch from the conventional plot. Still, the film's biggest strengthsare the outrageous sight gags and the main character, wonderfullyvoice-acted by Steve Carell. For those who find visually zany gagsboring or prefer serious films may find it too goofy for their taste.Still, many adults will find many things to relate to Gru, and kidswill relate to the children in the film.

Even with his (Eastern European?) accent, Steve Carell's playful humorshines through in the "despicable" character of Gru. The characternever feels stiff nor less than engaging (unlike the recent ShrekForever After). Gru may be mean-spirited, but in a charming way. JasonSegel has a great time as Vector, the young, geeky, diabolic rivalvillain who likes to don warm-up suits, whose every body movement isexpressively animated and exaggerated. Much of the "cute" elements comefrom the three orphan girls (Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, ElsieFisher) who truly act like how real little girls act with greatsubtleties in expressions and randomness. The relationship between Gruand the kids never feels cheesy or manufactured, even if you knew itwas coming.

I loved the look and design. All the characters, the objects, places, and vehicles in this film feel expressively bold and original. Wackycartoon physics feel effortlessly and seamlessly applied. I loved theattention to detail in this film. The character expressions arewonderful. It is Pixar-level of detail, which is a huge compliment. Thefilm also doesn't rely too heavily on current pop-culture references, which is a big plus.

For a film about a villain, it was strange not to see any "heroes."Still, I suppose that could have made the film too complex (that'd besomething Pixar would do) and would have interfered with Gru's eventualchange of heart in the story. Perhaps they'll explore the idea in thesequel. We the audience love Gru because we know that deep inside he'snot really evil—he's misunderstood and probably can be rehabilitatedafter some therapy.

As mentioned, the one complaint, if I were to make one, would be thesimplicity of the plot, and this is only if I were to compare the filmto Pixar's stories (which is an unfair comparison because the film'smain focus is different). Despicable Me's story, in its barest form, could possibly fit into a 30 minute episode. However, everything elsein this film more than makes up for it. Sure, it's not as thematicallydeep or complex as Pixar's work, as I tend to walk away from a Pixarfilm with always something to think about. While Despicable Me may bemore joke-driven, have more slapstick, sight gags, and more interestedin "fun," with its first rate animation, its crazy humor, its technicalachievements, and heartwarming characters, it stands boldly on its ownand rivals some of the great CG animations already showcased this year, very closely right up there with Toy Story 3 and How To Train YourDragon.

I watched the 2D version of "Despicable Me" with my kids thisafternoon. The trailers were not really very good or enticing for me tobe excited about it. It was honestly quite a mixed bag for me.

The story involved a super villain named Gru whose status wasthreatened by a nerdy upstart named Vector, who upped the evil ante bystealing the Great Pyramid of Egypt. (Is it my imagination or is Vectora dig at Bill Gates?) Anyway, to top that heist, Gru plots on stealingthe Moon itself. To do that, Gru saw the need to adopt three orphangirls, named Margo, Edith and Agnes, in order to infiltrate Vector'slair. Initially, harsh and compassion-less towards the children, Grueventually warms up and ends up actually caring for the kids. But canhis love for the kids triumph over his obsession to be the top villainin the world?

The initial scenes building up the story was too slow for me. In factmy wife and I both confessed to have dozed off in these parts. However, for me the fun and action begins when Gru went to adopt the girls. Iliked the movie the most when it showed heart, and the developing loveand sense of fatherhood of Gru towards the kids. Those two bedtimestory reading scenes were the highlights of the whole film for me. Thewhole rivalry thing with Vector was not too good for me, mostly owingto the "blah" way Vector was rendered and written.

The comedy could be too rude (like how Gru acted during his interviewwith Ms. Hattie of the orphanage), or even gruesome (like red stuffcoming out of a spiked box when a girl gets caught inside). However, when the movie tones down its hyperactivity and cranks up the humandrama, I can't help but be very much touched by these scenes. Gru'sscenes with Little Agnes (who positively loved fluffy unicorns!) wereall executed to tear-jerking perfection.

The voice acting by Steve Carrell was also instrumental for us toactually root for Gru despite his initial villainy. I was verysurprised to see at the end that it was no less than Ms. Julie Andrewswho voiced the funny character of Gru's mother. The voices of the threegirls, especially the very cute Agnes, were very well rendered. Theyellow blob-like Minions of Gru were also portrayed very cutely (butwhat are they, really?).

Compared to the excellent animated films so far seen this year, whichincluded "Toy Story 3" and "How to Train Your Dragon," "Despicable Me"falls behind in my opinion. The start may be quite annoying anduninteresting, however investing more time to watch will make thisrather brash comedy prove to be a most heart-warming adventure instead.

This is the first 2010 animated film I have seen, it was a funnyjourney for me, first of all, Steve Carrell's funny voice is a mainattribution as the protagonist Gru, and his yellow minions areunbelievably cute and adorable, plus three little cherubic girls, it isdifficult not to love them.

Now Pixar has set up an unsurpassable criterion in front of allanimated films, which is a regulatory competition to urge other filmstudios to elevate the quality of their animated films; anotheradvantage is to broaden the demography and attract more adultspectators to walk into the cinema for an animated work.

To cater for the anti-hero trend, the film focuses on a relentlessthief aiming to steal the moon to achieve the honor of world's No. 1thief of the world. With an unexpected intrusion of three organ girls, his scheme is off the track, but don't worry, there will be a happyending.

The design of the character is well-crafted, Since the opening scene ofthe stolen Egyptian pyramid, the comic atmosphere has hung over allover the film. On the other hand, the villain Victor fail to steal thethunder.

I am still eager to watch TOY STORY 3, THE ILLUSIONIST, and HOW TOTRAIN YOUR DRAGON, I wish I could always keep an innocent heart toaccept excellent animations.

This movie had potential to be a great film. The idea of a villaintaking care of three little girls, surrounded by bug-eyed minions, while trying to steal the moon, seemed like it would be worth a fewlaughs. Sadly, it wasn't.

What's with all the praises?

Most of the scenes were only to show of the 3D, so the overall film wasbland. Any time the movie came close to conveying real emotion or carefor the characters it jumped to a new scene. It was disappointing, Iwanted to care about the characters, but couldn't. I was excited whenthey began to show Gru's back story, but all we got were snippets, nothing substantial that fully explained his relationship with hismother, his notions of parenting, or turn to villainy. His fascinationwith the moon was barely touched upon, and could have helped supportthe film. Giving Gru some ray guns, gray clothes, and thick accent doesnot make him a villain, unless we know why he became a villain in thefirst place.

The movie was overall bland. The jokes fell flat. Perhaps littlechildren who have yet to develop a sense of humor beyond burps andfarts enjoyed it.

The voice work of Steve Carell was great, but the random addition ofJulie Andrews, who in my opinion is a great voice talent, was apointless waste of talent, seeing as how she couldn't have had morethan three lines.

I will say one thing positive about this film, I really enjoyed themusic.

"Despicable Me"had the potential be very funny but a weak script stopsit from being as funny as it could have been.

The animation is excellent, with bold bright colours very prominent allthrough. Steve Carrell does well as the voice of the anti-hero who hasfamily issues.

He plays Gru, a villain who is determined to beat the efforts of hismain rival, who has just stolen the Pyramids. For reasons toocomplicated to explain here his plan involves adopting three smallgirls. Needless to say living with the girls helps him to get adifferent perspective on his life.

There are a few laugh-out-loud moments (the Minions are pretty funny)and some good action/chase scenes but not enough to keep the audienceengaged. I left the cinema thinking that the film could have been a lotbetter with a more original story
