Critics opinions:
"Toy Story 3" has plenty of action, adventure, and fun once it getsgoing, but even better is the overall effect of nostalgia for theviewer. Comedy films like to make fun of these types of childhoodexperiences, and no doubt they do have a comical side especiallythrough the perspective of adults; for example, Rick Moranis ismemorable playing with action figure dolls in a scene in "Spaceballs"."Toy Story 3" gives playtime scenarios a positive and tear-jerking spinwith high hopes of lifting them from comedy into important individualand educational experiences. However, the catch is that most of themovie is a parallel adventure played out by the toys themselves. Havingthe toys come to life is not quite as annoying as in other films. Itactually makes sense from the perspective of a hypothetical gamescenario that a kid would likely make up.
Andy, 17 years old now, is past playing such games and leaves his toysuntouched in a toy box. He keeps the box around at his age mainly forthe requirements of the plot, and we can imagine the writers had adifficult time figuring out how to begin the third of these "Toy Story"movies. They start with an flashback to Andy's toys in full lifelikevisual effects, which seems right out of a segment for a modern videogame. Andy lets some of the toy characters behave based on theirinherent persona's, but some of them he creates himself, such as givinga piggy bank, Hamm (John Ratzenberger), an evil nature as the ultimatebad guy of his stories. Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen),and associates are the main good guys.
But these are short lived events as we flash forward to Andy's grown upconcerns about college. His toys quickly downgrade from a hope to playwith him again to a hope that he will store them in the attic ratherthrow them in the trash. Is this a slight metaphor for keeping thefruits of our childhood visions alive? Well, the toys see their role asservants to any future need Andy might have for them, but an atticisn't very entertaining, so the toys get sent to Sunnyside daycare inthe hopes they may be of interest to a new generation of kids. Theywon't. The toys get sent to a play room for toddlers, who have noimagination and only bang the toys into things and rip them apart. Thekids might as well have a bunch of rocks to roll around since theycertainly aren't getting any benefit out of elaborately designed toys.
Woody (Tom Hanks) tries to convince the rest of Andy's toys to breakout of the place and to live in peace in Andy's attic, but they areskeptical. They think Andy was about to throw them in the trash andthey want new kids to play with them. Woody escapes by himself, but ayoung girl, Bonnie, finds him and takes him to her house. Woody enjoyshis games with her, but her toys (including a theater porcupine, Mr.Pricklepants, who shushes the other toys so he can stay in character)inform him that Sunnyside isn't sunny and his friends are in trouble. Abig purple and strawberry smelling bear, named "Lots-O'-Huggin' Bear"or "Lotso" (Ned Beatty), who rides in the back of a toy truck and walkswith a cane like Yoda, is actually a menacing warden over Sunnysidedaycare. He loves to give hugs, but he also likes to send the newbies(toys, that is) to the toddler playroom (named Caterpillar Room) andkeep them prisoner at night so they won't try to escape. He creates anoligarchy of toys in which his elderly elite get to play with the olderkids (in the Butterfly Room), who actually use them as intended andimagine them in more sophisticated games.
The escape sequences are the most adventuresome and funny parts of themovie. Lotso marshals his forces to keep the new toys in line. His longtime enforcer is Big Baby, but he also has Ken (Michael Keaton), anoctopus (Whoopi Goldberg), and roving trucks on his side. His newestaddition is Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who he reboots to a defaultmilitary mode (stripping him of his former identity) by reading hisinstructional manual. At one point Buzz gets reset into Spanish mode, turning into a romantic. Ken entertains Barbie by modeling clothes. Hehas a soft spot for clothing as much as she does, perhaps fromparticipating in so many games imagined by girls. Mr. Potato Head (DonRickles) and Mrs. Potato Head (Estelle Harris) have parts similar to aTransformer or certain Vampires ears, eyes, and mouths functionperfectly while detached. Mrs. Potato Head sees over long distances toher lost eye, and Mr. Potato Head attaches his parts to pita bread. Aretheir parts therefore nearly immortal?
It expands from this arch of a playful adventure to make a point aboutthe value of play. It's a film about nostalgia for a boy's pastexperiences playing with toys as a sort of simulation or self-trainingfor life. It might be a tear-jerker for many viewers, perhaps mostlyadults, because many will relate to its message. The message is perhapsthat Andy had a great deal to do with raising himself, but not entirelyon his own. He also had the help of toys to manipulate and use aslittle pegs for his memories. These toys develop their own back storyfor him, some of which is inherent in the toys' characters but some ofwhich is quite unique and invented by him. In this sense, his toys areexternal memories, storing a mini world of his past imaginings andmental experiments. It's important to him to pass these memories along.
i'm probably the only Disney fan on the planet who thinks the Disneycomputer animated films are somewhat over-rated. don't get me totallywrong, i think they're still great films and definitely the leader incurrent CGI animation and the top in the craft. i just always havehappened to like hand drawn cartoons better than CGI. hand drawingalways feels funnier and more spontaneous than CGI
my favorites of the CGI Disney/Pixar films are 'Finding Nemo' and'Cars', but i've always liked the 'Toy Story' films despite all thehype and marketing tie-ins that always drive clever and original ideasinto the ground and make them seem less original and makes them seem socommon.
the 'Toy Story' trilogy of films has survived so much mindlessmarketing and over-exposure that i probably should have expected thethird sequel to come through. but i didn't. i kind of thought it wouldbe dull and predictable and all the spark of originality bull dozeredout by commercialism. not at all. in fact it was one of the mostconsistently funny of all the 'Toy' movies. maybe not the curtest orthe best, but i thought it was the funniest. and the plot with theSunnyside Daycare was really subtle and hilarious in a cute-sinisterway. the idea of toys selling out other toys in order to gain advantageseemed all too real and indicative of the sad state of human affairs.
even though this film was very family oriented mostly, i thought it alittle strange that a lot of this was kind of dark and scary. this isprobably the most suspenseful and disturbing of all the 'Toy' movies.it wasn't just the chilling concept of the toys selling out other toys, but a lot of the situations the toys faced were dangerous andfrightening. i mean the whole scene with the garbage dump furnace madethe horror scenes in Sid's bedroom seem gentle.
so far at number "3", the 'Toy Story' animated films still earn theircharming legacy and place in Disney fan's hearts. all you have to do isread the overwhelming amount of positive reviews this film has receivedfrom reviewers online. the 'Toy Story' movies are amongst the very fewcommercial products Hollywood turns out that are truly worthy of thelove and praise they receive. something Disney has always managed to dofrom the beginning, manufacture good movies that have cleverness andheart in a mostly cold, commercial Hollywood market.
TOY STORY 3 - CATCH IT ( A+ ) Every time I see Toy Story movie, Iwonder what next the creators can have stored for us and to be honest Iget stunned every time, it was very recently I saw Toy Story 1 & 2 in2010, So, I was very excited for the Toy Story 3 and finally I got myhands on it. When it started I wonder what will they do now but trustme the creators know what they are going into and they give us what wewant Toys on Big Adventure! Every moment from first till last a personkeep wondering what will happened next? as the things take unexpectedturn every other moment. The Toy Story trilogy have been as engaging asany thriller/adventure movie can be. I loved every part of it and can'twait for them to make another Toy Story because their story can beenjoyed by everyone whether kid, young, adult or old people.
Toy Story 3 made the "trilogy" complete. Although, the plot, emotionalat times, created a bittersweet taste and a lump in the throat, itabounded with creativity. The movie keeps the most beloved charactersand address the theme of friendship and change. There is a time and aseason for all things. The viewer can relate with the idea that lifechange is inevitable. We must learn to appreciate each stage of lifeand hold on to the sweet memories. The toys are stuck between remainingfaithful to Andy and accepting the fact that all children grow up. Theyfeel a duty to stick together and be there for Andy when he needs them. This sense of duty and commitment is portrayed many times, as Woodytries to convince the toys to return to Andy and stick together, andeven when they face death (in the garbage furnace they reach out tohold hands and face it together). Other positive values include respectfor the life of others, both friends (Buzz jumps under falling debristo push Jessie out of the way) and enemies (Woody saves"Lot's-O-Huggin' Bear" by pulling him out from under a piece of metalon the garbage conveyor belt) alike. It is not our job to choose wholives and dies, that's up to God. We are to do what we can to upholdjustice, but also exercise love and compassion as we can.
There were only a few aspects of the movie in which I was disappointed. The scary looking baby and clown toys were a little unnecessary, reminiscent of the "Twilight Zone." Ken is portrayed as a metrosexual. He is self absorbed, excessively preoccupied with his appearance andwith clothes, self conscious of his being a 'girl's toy,' and has girlyhandwriting. It's unfortunate that Pixar had to take a stab at manhood, but I suppose that this contrasts with Andy who is growing intoadulthood with kindness, security, and concern for others.
The animation in Toy Story 3 is very well done, from the new high-techplay sequence in the opening scene, to the incredibly colorful andcomplex atmosphere of Sunnyside Daycare. Hilarious newcharacterizations are spread throughout the film to counteract theseriousness of the plot. The antics of "Spanish Buzz Lightyear" and theinventiveness of "Sandwhich Wrap" Mr. Potato Head could not help butmake me wonder...'who comes up with these things?!!" Very creative!! Inan age where people leave the house to get away from their family, children grow up too quickly, and society promotes a "take care ofyourself" attitude, Toy Story 3 encourages the development andmaintenance of family and friends, value for others' lives, andprinciples of perseverance and commitment.
Toy Story 3 is the leading edge in animation this year and even standsproud above the feature film releases of 2010 for two reasons: it takesseemingly insignificant material and breathes through it inventive, imaginative life it is reminiscent of a true, breathtakingblockbuster and secondly, the animation beautifully captures reallife scenery convincingly and the toys seem realistic while havingbelievable, empathic human characteristics. It is also joyously funny.A new character called Loslo, a strawberry scented toy bear from a daycare center, gets some of the best laughs and adding to Ned Beatty'sdrawl is Loslo's hilarious, almost show stopping characterization which is a true surprise. As a nice aside, attachment to toys issomething Toy Story 3 develops. Why we needed them is a question I'dlike an answer to and although it doesn't entirely give me what I'mlooking for, it nevertheless turns the notions of toy hugging into anemotional and rewarding experience, much like our attachment to toys. When Andy's toys go on the wayside, Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear(Tim Allen) and several supporting others meet the day care center toysand the effect is astonishing and joyful. More toys! The people fromPixar Animation are the premier animation house. Their credits areimpressive reading since 1995 and since 2006, with Cars, they have putone out each year. Their secret in the Toy Story films is taking thesimple and making it incredible and their latest is sheer class.
Fantastic movie that boldly completes the trilogy in a satisfying,tear-wiping story of insight and meaning. It's a rare moment in filmwhere the sequels continue getting better, adding context and deptheach time which makes the whole more than just the parts.
Pixar took a huge risk to revisit the movie (again!) which made itfamous. Even more incredible is their willingness to risk marring thisbrand by advancing the storyline and tackling issues like friendship, freedom, purpose, milestones and letting go.
It might not be as kid-friendly as the first two Toy Story movies, butthen again, it's been 15 years since the first movie. The audience hasgrown-up, just as Andy has. I actually appreciate the story arc andtrying to answer the eventual questions we all had - "What happensAFTER Andy?" If you're concerned for your children... simply wait untilthey're a little older. I think it would've been less brilliant tosimply try to copy the same formula from 1 & 2.
I know that at some point early in the movie I stopped even thinkingabout animation or even toys as the movie is so well done all you seeare characters. When they face the prospect of death together, it's astouching as if they were alive -- and after all, we've grown to knowand love these characters too.
For those that liked the first two better, just wait. We had YEARS ofadmiring them on repeat viewings. I think Toy Story 3 will gain innostalgia value and eventually be seen as the perfect ending to theseries. Even now I'm wistful thinking about that final scene, and thetouching concern shown by Andy (and the writers) for our specialfriends.
