Season Of The Witch deals with a middle-aging woman whose daughter ismoving out of the house and whose husband is always away at work. Shebecomes plagued by clairvoyant-like dreams,takes up witch-craft, has an affair with her daughter's college professor andeventually due to her paranoia, kills off the last strand of normal life shehad. Of course this strand being her husband. By the end of the film she hasbeen completely indoctrinated into her local witches coven. If you are aRomero fan like myself rent it or buy it, if not just rentit.

Romero actually had a pretty bizarre start of career when you come tothink of it. After his hugely successful and groundbreaking zombie film"Night of the Living Dead", it seems like he wanted to prove that hewas capable of delivering more than just shocking horror and heattempted to do romantic comedy ("There's Always Vanilla") and occultdrama (this "Season of the Witch") before returning to disturbing,hysterical horror with "The Crazies". Although it certainly isn't amongRomero's best films, this underrated gem of cult cinema remains anintriguing and ambitious oddity worth checking out in case you're a fanof experimental 70's cinema. It centers on the shy housewife JoanMitchell during a turning point of her life: her daughter has a life ofher own now and her husband is always too occupied with work, so Joan –under the influence of friends – turns to witchcraft and the occult,leaving her often in a trance-state where she can't tell the differencebetween dreams and reality. It's fascinating to see how Romero is oftentorn between a choice of genres: is he filming a horror picture or anart-house gem? He tends to prefer the latter, so I can easilyunderstand why so many die-hard fans of his zombie trilogy were utterlydisappointed with "Season of the Witch". It's praiseworthy how Romerosuccessfully approaches women's situations and how he does not mock theprejudiced lives they're often living. The dialogs are cleverly writtenand the film's tone is genuinely obscure, but it lacks excitement andpower. More negative elements: the production values (very lowbudgeted) look awfully dated and the script in fact is a little tootalky (read: on the verge of boring). I quite liked the film yet I'mhappy that it wasn't the 130 minutes director's cut I saw. I fear thatversion would have been way too long and dull.

I saw this film for the first time yesterday night and being a fan ofRomeroI anticipated a good old fashioned horror, as even the title wouldsuggest.This film is not strictly a horror film, although the bizarre dreamsequences are quite disturbing. These are used to good effect thoughbecause the viewer can not initially tell if she is asleep or awake, likealimbo in between the two, this plays an important role in the endingsequence which is rather unexpected!

This film follows a bored and claustraphobic Catholic middle Americanwoman's exploration into the darker side of life. Initially we see her asareluctant and straight laced character however after a tarot card readingshe becomes curious about witchcraft and soon begins practicing it. Thewoman is also unsatisfied with her married life and begins an affair witha'friend' of her daughter's.

All in all I would say that age hasn't been the kindest to this filmalthough it is a good analysis of a paranoid America at this point inhistory the way that sex, drugs and witchcraft are portrayed. The actingand dialogue are annoying at the best of times but it is an interestingfilmto watch...7/10

Joan is this really bored woman who has nightmares and she meets upwith a fortune teller who says that she could be a witch. Since Joan isbored with her life and takes abuse from his husband, she decides tobecome a witch and gets her daughters boyfriend or teacher into bed.

This movie could have been much shorter. I would have taken out thepart where the guy tries to get the old lady to smoke. That didn't haveanything to do with anything in this movie. I would have also taken outthe nightmares because they really were distracting.

I would have kept her daughter in the movie just so her daughter couldcatch her boyfriend or teacher in bed with the mom.

To get the most out of 'Season Of The Witch' ignore the horror tag and putRomero's zombie movies out of your mind. This is more of a character studycum social document of an early 70s bored housewife's attempt to findmeaning in her life. Faced with dull bourgeois conformity on one side, and acounter-culture that offers no real answers on the other, she eventuallyfinds her own direction. Low budget, variable performances and all, I stillfound this to be a much more complex and accomplished movie than Romero'smost recent effort 'Bruiser'. While it doesn't impress as much as hisoverlooked vampire gem 'Martin' (which shares certain similarities inapproach and theme), it's not to be dismissed. It may not be entirelysuccessful, but I highly recommend it.
