True Grit is a Coen Brothers remake of the original John Wayne film bythe same name (a film which I haven't seen). It brings a breath offresh air to the wild West, reviving the gunslinging genre in which werecently haven't seen many films.

Starring Hailee Steinfeld, Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon. Steinfeld, agirl of only 14 years old, holds her own with her co-stars. She reallyshows that she has a lot of talent and I'm sure we'll see a lot more ofher to come in future.

The cinematography in this film is beautiful, with shots reminiscent ofOnce Upon a Time in the West obviously paying homage to the greatWestern films. The story is superbly written, as you would expect fromthe Coen brothers and likewise the directing is superb. The onecriticism is there were a couple of continuity errors, but theseprobably wouldn't have been picked up by normal movie-goers

This is a fantastic film, but not for everyone. A bit slow in pace, theguy I saw it with got bored of it and fell asleep in one part. But thiswould be because he prefers more fast paced, up beat films.

All in all True Grit is a superb film, once again showing that Joel &Ethan Coen are the best in the business.

3 of us watched this tonight and all agreed that the acting wasexcellent. The production is top notch but the dialog, the script isdull and the ending rather anti-climactic.

The young girl who wishes to avenge her father's death is the bestcharacter in the entire story but she isn't given much time to allowmuch personality to show with exception of the brief sadness over herfather's death, and her awe of what is happening around her. She spendsa lot of time staring, watching, trying to comprehend but we don'treally know her that well as a person.

The same could be said for the rest of the characters. They have afairly narrow margin to express themselves in.

Beautifully shot, well done but anti-climactic and dry.

Based on the original source text more than the 1969 John Wayne filmthe Cohen brothers return with this Wild West tale of redemption andrevenge. Simply when Mattie Ross's father is gunned down by Tom Chaney(Brolin) she sets herself on a mission to avenge his death and seeChaney brought to justice by hanging but at 14 she will need some helpin the form of Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn (Bridges, think Lebowskiwith an eye patch) and joined by an almost unrecognizable Matt Damon aslaw man LaBoeuf, the unlikely trio set out on the criminals trail. Nowas a fan of the Cohen's earlier work but not so much of their recentoutput I approached this film with caution and I was right to, its notthat it's a bad film it's just that it isn't that good either. It looksfine and is acted well but the pacing is all wrong, you never reallyget to spend any significant time with the characters so you neverdevelop a relationship with them which leaves you ultimately feelingempty and cold. It is also hard at times to understand what anyone issaying in their southern drawl which also doesn't help. Add to that thebizarre quirks like the weird tourette's guy and the bear man and theending that just comes abruptly from nowhere and it's a strange watch.On paper it all points to it being a great movie, sadly on the screenit just falls flat.
