Critics opinions:
Bad directing, bad acting, full of holes and stolen from other movies.
I really thought the movie would be fun to watch, i like a goodaction/thriller movie. A friend and i watched the movie and wanted tostop watching for a couple of times. The dialogues were so easy tofollow that sometimes we both said what the actor should say inresponse and he did ! The movies jumps from here to there withoutpreparing the viewer. It was like a timed action movie, action for 5minutes then some character scenes and just as you start to fall asleepsome action and that just keeps going on through the whole movie, boring . .
Oh my god, Ben, what is wrong with your accent? I guess people fromBoston talk with an accent, there is nothing wrong with that but itseems that where all the other actors just try to concentrate on actingwith Renner doing a superb job Ben tries to show how good his accent isand fails miserably because of him trying to much, that's his problemin this movie, he tries so hard to be not only a good actor but also agood director that he fails in doing both.
All in all i would say it's a waste of time, watch the ones he stolethe ideas from instead. Point Break, Heat.
I give it three stars for some of the action bits, some, and Renner.
The people rating this movie well must not watch many movies. There hasbeen some really great heist / bank robbery movies over the years, andthis is not one of them. The scenes come at you in a boring andpredictable fashion. One cliché after another. I wanted to like thefilm. I was expecting something with sizzling action and unexpectedplot twists, but it just wasn't there. Very little characterdevelopment left me not caring at all about some of the leads. This isall too common in many movies today. The directors are so intent ongetting to the "fun stuff" that the groundwork isn't covered. Anyway,I'm not going to waste any more time reviewing a movie that wasted mytime.
I was expecting a lot more from this film than it delivered. What Iliked were the supporting cast performances, chiefly Jeremy Renner'sperformance as the "like a brother", who will not be going back toWalpole any time soon. Next in line were the stellar performances ofBlake Lively, Chris Cooper, Pete Postlethwaite, and a surprisingly goodshowing from Albert Magloan, as the curiously happy driver. Jon Hammplayed a very stiff and believable FBI agent. What I could have donewithout, was the writer and star of the movie, Ben Affleck. I found hischaracter malformed, uninteresting and his portrayal uninspired andlackluster. He dragged through this movie like an anchor in soft sandduring choppy surf. About the time I started praying that he was goingto be blown into a million bits of shredded and unneeded flesh, Ichecked my watch and saw that I still had another forty five minutes togo. Oh No! Affleck was so bad that it ruined the performance of RebeccaHall, who might very well be a good actress, but we certainly weren'tgiven the opportunity to find out in this film. Further, Affleck's egois so overblown that he couldn't just let his character die in a blazeof gunfire the way he should have. Oh no, he had to escape to asouthern bayou with a half a sack full of cash, so I'm sure there willbe a "The Town II" coming to a theatre near you soon. Now consider thisplot line disaster for a moment. Every cop in the city is looking forthis guy because he just shot up a bunch of policemen, so the Boston PDsends men to Logan and Bradley airports (Bradley is over an hour and ahalf away) to wait for him, but they forget to send even one patrolmanto South Street Station, the only place where one can board the Amtrakout of 'The Town'? It's hard to believe that Affleck would even try topull that obvious plot flaw over on anyone, because South StreetStation is exactly where any reasonably sane law enforcementprofessional would begin looking for a fleeing suspect. No one canescape by air anymore, this isn't the 70's, and you can't waltz onto anairplane carrying half a sack full of cash and an AR-15. Even theBoston PD would probably agree that you can't get most firearms pastthe TSA, thus to leave 'The Town', extended rail or car would have beenthe only options for a fleeing suspect. I was ready to shoot myself bythis point. If there is one thing that they "got right" in this movie,it was when a cop on 'construction detail' plainly saw the robbersdressed as nuns and just looked the other way. However, that brings upanother great plot flaw
did that cop not have his police radio on? Washe not listening to all the chatter on the radio that there was anarmored car heist, huge gunfight, and police chase going on right onthe other side of the river and that the fleeing criminals werecrossing the Charlestown bridge and coming right down his throat?Simply unbelievable, due to all the plot flaws.
Following Gone. Baby Gone, the re-invention of Ben Affleck continuesapace with this highly satisfying crime thriller set in andencapsulating the Boston neighbourhood of Charlestown. Affleck is Doug, the hood with a heart of gold, the brains of a crew that includes loosecanon James. When he falls for a bank clerk from one of his raids, andthen inserts himself in her day-to-day life, the consequences provelethal.
The plot complicates and unravels deliciously, but it is the charactersand their intertwining neuroses that keep your attention here. Doug iscut from the same cloth as De Niro's character in Heat, a man whosemoral compass is askew with regard to social mores, but rigid withinthe terms of his own world. James, on the other hand, is Begbie fromTrainspotting, or Edward Norton in Rounders, a walking liability whosemoral code, if he has one, is known only to himself. The Town may lackoriginality, but it pays off in spades in terms of genre expectation.Doug's motivations are tied up with not wanting to be his Dad (theever-competent Chris Cooper), fretting about abandonment by Mum at theage of six, and carrying the regret of failing to be a contender whenpro ice hockey gave him a shot.
Love interest Clare (Rebecca Hall) has family ghosts of hero own todeal with. Doug and Clare meet across the soiled socks in thelaundromat, a low-key affecting scene that Affleck controls withaplomb. The critics who in recent years called him washed up as anactor must be hiding behind the couch.
The only wobble is Pete Postlehwaite as the local crime kingpin, in hisultimate role, oozing his usual visual charisma but making anunfortunate accent choice. The mother storyline, also, resolves in amanner you will see coming from miles away.
The Boston locality is utilized evocatively, and the whole thing movesalong with pace and verve. Affleck has proved himself an astutefilmmaker in recent years. Good to have him back.
well, first what's good. some quite decent actors (especially rebeccahall and chris cooper), an elaborate production, and on top of that afinely tuned ending. however, what sticks to my mind is three words:"heat" and "ben affleck". this film very much draws on the themes ofthat other modern day classic with al pacino and robert deniro. it'sgot the interaction between cop and gangster in direct conversations,as well as relationships feeling the strain of one party's criminality(and not to forget even if you might want to: the a-bit-too-trigger-happy accomplice that might spoil the day). the film's take on thisfamiliar story isn't at all bad, but that doesn't hide the fact thataffleck is no deniro. it takes great acting skills to do thecompassionate gangster who freely slips between doing the dirty workone moment and being the sympathetic, lonely man who just wants someoneto love the next. the script should get some blame as well, as it'shard to make credible a guy who goes from loving tender care to cracksome other gangster's fingers without seeming remorse, but neverthelessben affleck fail to make his character wholly credible. all in all nota bad movie, but rather see "heat" or "the departed" first if you canmake the choice.
