Critics opinions:
When i went to go see the green hornet i didn't know what to expect. Iknew it would be good but nothing special. But wow i was so wrong. Thegreen hornet is like a hybrid of everything. Got amazing action, hilarious comedy, dramatic part near the end and the ongoing romance. Its amazing how much they crammed into this movie and it was stillgood.
The first hour is perfect. It grabs you in and never lets go. When iheard Seth Rogen was going to play the green hornet, i honestly thoughtthat was going to ruin the movie. After seeing it, i thought it wouldhave sucked without Seth Rogen. He took things serious when it neededto be serious and when it was dramatic he was dramatic. Not perfect buthe got the job done well. Kato is also another big reason why thismovie is good. The climax is also very cool.
I did think though that it slowed down in the middle. Like it startedwith a bang and ended with a bang but in between was like anintermission. It was good just not as good. I saw it in 2D and i'mgoing to be honest, if i saw it in 3D, there wouldn't be any crazystuff going on.
All in all it is one of the best 2011 films so far. Sequel is notneeded but it'll probably happen. But this movie is so close toperfect. Must see.
I have read reviews of this movie that compare it to Batman begins andIron Man,but the green hornet is not even anywhere near those levels. That was one reason why they let Seth Rogen take this character.
Is the movie entertaining, absolutely. Will you get disappointed if yougo into the theater thinking this will be like all the other super heromovies, absolutely. This is NOT , any other super-hero movie. If youdon't like Seth Rogens other movies (superbad, pineapple express,drill-bit Taylor) then you may not like this either. And that is thebiggest flaw this movie has. But going into this Seth Rogen and EvenGoldberg said they were writing the screenplay and it would be one ofthere movies.
In this movie they do some things a little different and that is makingpeople uneasy. The hero's have more character and show there emotions(like after the first crime they stopped they went back to Reid's homeand jumped around very excited just like someone in real life may dobecause they just saved lives and kicked about 6 guys butts).
Now the villain is more like a "one gun" kinda villain, he does notshow much depth. And yes, the villain could have been better.
The whole movie could have been better. But a lot of movies could havebeen better. Seth Rogen does pull off this character , and Kato isawesome. Its suppose to be funny, and it is. It is suppose to be actionpacked , and it is.
No one ever said that this movie will be like Batman or Iron man ,sodon't expect that. Just expect something with a lot of action , isfunny, and shows hero's that try to be more human then other hero'shave been.
The Pitch: To bee or not to bee a hero.
The Review: 2011 is shaping up to be a year of sequels, remakes andre-imaginings. There are half a dozen major comic book propertiesclogging up our multiplexes this summer, and the fact that this one isescaping in the middle of winter and was originally a radio serial isno obstacle to its box office aspirations. The Green Hornet is one ofthose properties that you may be aware of, rather than having an innatefamiliarity with, with the most famous incarnation being the TV seriesthat gave Bruce Lee his first taste of fame. The principle is alwayspretty simple masked vigilantes fight crime with unconventionalmethods and a cool black car. It's been in development for anastonishing seventeen years, and during that time George Clooney, MarkWahlberg, Jake Gyllenhall, Jet Li and Stephen Chou were all consideredto appear in front of the camera, and Kevin Smith, ChristopherMcQuarrie and Michel Gondry were all at one stage attached behind it.Gondry would have originally made this his feature film debut back in1997, and the Hollywood merry-go-round was spinning so long that tenyears later, he stepped on and ended up being the person to shepherd itto the screen.
Gondry's had a very varied career in that ten year gap; an all-timeclassic in the shape of Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, but someof his other work could best be described as ramshackle, including thewell-intentioned but terminally shabby Be Kind Rewind. He undoubtedlyhas an extensive visual box of tricks, which he's put to use over thepast twenty years in a variety of formats, but he has proved that he'sbetter with the visuals, and sometimes if the actors aren't of thehighest caliber then he may struggle to get the best from them. But inall the other areas that counts, Gondry delivers in the Green Hornet there's plenty of clean action sequences and Gondry uses his tricks togive many of them a unique spin, the pacing is well handled and Gondryhandles the shifts in tone well.
Being a comic book movie in nature, The Green Hornet doesn't demandShakespearean theatrics, but there is a good, talented cast here inplaces. Christoph Waltz seems to have won himself a rent-a-bad-guycareer following his Oscar winning turn for Tarantino, and does what hecan with a neurotic bad guy role, but shows he can still flip betweenhumour and malice at will. Jay Chou may not have been the first name onmost people's lists of potential Katoes, and he does struggle withEnglish in a few places (a fact that the script willinglyacknowledges), but he's got just about enough winning charisma to seehim through in the role; sadly I don't think it will have the sameeffect on his career as it did on Bruce Lee's. Which brings us toCameron Diaz. You may read other reviews which feel that Diaz's roleserves no purpose, although the script casts her as the criminologistunwittingly feeding ideas to the leads, but she does actually have acrucial role.
Y'see, whenever Seth Rogen isn't looking unbelievably gormless enough,or just comes over as a partially raging misogynist instead of acomplete and total one, Diaz is there as a foil, allowing Rogen's BrittReed to sink to yet another new low. Rogen has lifted a lot of comedieshe's been in previously, but here he sucks the good will out like avacuum, and the movie generally works better when he's not talking. Theodd thing is that, given that he and writing partner Evan Goldbergwrote the script, he's pretty much done this to himself. The generalstory is in keeping with the Green Hornet mythology established sincethe original radio days, which calls for Reid to be at odds with boththe good and the bad guys. The main problem is that Rogen and Goldberghave chosen to achieve this by making Britt Reid a complete and utterarse, who every time he's given a choice chooses to continue being anarse, and the only character traits he develops across the vastmajority of the running time don't do him any favours. So there's alead character who it's very hard to root for, but if you can findyourself at least tolerating him then you should actually have a prettygood time with this.
Why see it at the cinema: Satisfying action, Gondry's off the wallvisual stylings and a decent amount of laughs make this a good packageif you're looking for a Saturday night at the multiplex with a big bagof popcorn.
Why see it in 3D: Here the arguments are less compelling. It's aconversion job, and while it's not as bad as the execrable Clash Of TheTitans remake from last year, it lacks the depth of field to lookconvincingly 3D for long periods or any real stand out in-your-facemoments.
The Score: 7/10
This could be such a good movie, but they (the filmmakers)keep makingit bad. Not being the biggest Seth Rogan fan he did an adequate job inthis movie, but he really does need to learn some new gimmicks. theSalvation in this movie goes to Jay Chou, his portrayal of Kato wasfresh and I think Bruce Lee would even be proud . The writing was verygood and it was fast paced so as not to get too bored with Seth butKato was the true comedian, at first The Hornet was a Bumblingidiot(which Seth plays so well- i always wondered if he was reallyacting)but he grew into the part towards the end
I can't really in good conscience give a film with such a high budget ahigher rating it is entertaining but not a movie that i would watchover and over (see my list)
Seth Green should make more movies about characters that smoke weedrather than smoke a ton of weed in real life while writing scripts likethis.
A half-hearted effort at best; a shameless pocket picker of tweens andteens who thought they might see a decent super-hero flick. Other thanBatman or the kid from Kickass, this is the only superhero on the bigscreen without any actual superpowers. The only superpower the GreenHornet has is to trick people out of their money.
And, note to Seth: if you're going to do a movie in 3D, don't go ontalk shows and say 'I don't really care for 3D, I can take it or leaveit.' I'm sure the studio was impressed with that comment on the HowardStern show among others.
The first 20 minutes there is absolutely nothing worthy of 3D - many ofthe scenes I took my glasses off to stave off the inevitable post-3Dheadache only to see little difference in the picture on the screen. Athree minute scene in an office with a young-Hornet talking to his Daddoes not require 3D. And the actual action scenes benefit not a witfrom the 3D so Seth please save the 3D for the James Camerons of theworld. ( though, in his defense, I'm sure the studio foisted 3D uponthis production ) I guess Seth is milking the name he has legitimatelymade for himself. Seems he's surrounded himself with a bevy of socalled 'producers' on this one; a hodge-podge group of ex 1st ADs,production managers and writers who I'm sure were all happy as hell tobe attached as a producer to a 120 million dollar superhero movie butyou can be sure as hell they wouldn't dare offer any criticism in thestory or editing.
Neil Moritz is the only one on this project with any producer chops andI'm sure he was just the puppet for the studio making sure Seth didn'tdo something completely stupid to derail the project and just stoodback to let Seth make this serviceable action movie.
The story is a weave of every clichéd action plot you can think of. AndSeth even had the balls to actually call his sidekick 'Kato', rippingit off from the original ( and brilliant ) Pink Panther series withPeter Sellers. Basically the Green Hornet is Batman without any musclesor a cool costume - oh, and he can't fight either. But don't worry,Kato, the young man who grew up parent less in the Shanghai streets canput a Nasa scientist to shame and build a car with multiple machine gunturrets and a flamethrower in 24 hours and also make a mean Cappuccino.Every scene I could picture Seth at home smoking weed with that stonerlaugh of his saying 'Ya, that would be cool dude! And then Hornet kicksKato in the nuts. HaHaHa'. A method that worked on other movies of hisbut not this one.
Cameron Diaz just walks through this one but she makes the most of whatshe's given which isn't much. God if there's a sequel to this one I'mgoing to puke. A crooked DA, a mobster self-conscious about hiswardrobe, and a rich kid in search of meaning in his life - what acrock. At least we believed in Batman's reason for wanting to be aSuperhero. But in Hornet, the idea to become a Superhero is borne outof a drunken all-night bender and the desire to 'go do something cool'with Kato. And what they end up doing isn't actually that cool. Theaction signature on Hornet is fast motion Karate that dead stops tosuper-slow mo just before the bad guys go down. Been done a 1000 times.
Its weird but they say they spent 120 million on this movie and I guessa lot went to the stunts and visual effects but it still comes acrossas a lower budget movie ( lower, not 'low') - the production value justisn't there. And in a sequence at the beginning when he's jumping fromcar to car in his dream garage with a girl the picture was fuzzy withor without the 3D glasses.
Maybe the 70 million gross is a reflection of this mediocre effort. Adrop of 48% from the 1st weekend is a lot considering its only upagainst The Rite and the rehashed Mechanic. Not a chance this is goingto stumble to 100 million domestic gross which pretty much makes this afailure for the Seth Rogen name. When a studio spends 120 million on aSuperhero flick they expect 200 million domestic. Nobody's going torisk that kind of money again on Seth anytime soon. This scale ofproject was a test for Seth Rogen and he failed.
My guess is he'll be stepped back down to the 10-25 million budgetrange in a controlled risk scenario. He has been good at extractinggood multiples of the budget in Superbad and Pineapple Express. But hefailed with Adam Sandler in a recent buddy pic I forget the name of.Seth Rogen has jumped the shark and will now likely follow the path ofSandler - a string of half-flops and lazy efforts that will inevitablybe marked with a surprise hit here or there.
Seth, you're already turning into a memory. We know you've got enoughcash to hang around Hollywood the rest of your life and get into allthe right parties but I strongly suggest you have your dealer arrested, check into rehab and free up the unused, smoke-clogged portions of yourbrain to pound out some more super-funny hits. We know you got it inyou.
Or just relax poolside with your killer weed for the rest of your lifetalking about how good you were.
