Critics opinions:
I generally don't like documentary-like movies, but this one had adifferent twist. From the beginning you can see that the priest is afraud and hardly believes in exorcism or God Himself. So, if you expectan atmospheric movie like The exorcist or the exorcism of Emily Rose, just forget it. Everything is explainable for this priest! Overall agood movie that could be even better, if it had a better pace. Slow attimes, too fast in other parts, it kind of confused me. If you areseeking for a different type of adventure movie, or a different type ofreligious movie, go for it. Yet, do not expect a thriller out ofit.------
Below par addition to the horror-mockumentary sub-genre, chroniclingthe tale of the Reverend Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian), an Evangelicalminister with a sideline in performing exorcisms. When his faith goessouth, he instigates a documentary expose on the fraudulent and harmfulnature of his work and sets off with a two-headed film-crew to theremote property of farmer Louis Sweetzer (Louis Herthum), who believeshis daughter Nell (Ashley Bell) is implicated in a spate of cattlemutilations by way of demonic possession. Marcus promptly 'frees' thetroubled girl from the Hell spawned grip of Abalan (for it is he) and, with the Farmer's blessings and payment, is swiftly on his way toretirement, unaware his troubles (and ours) are about to begin...
For the first hour or so, director Daniel Stamm does an efficient, ifnone too imaginative job of sustaining moderate intrigue and interestin a so-so story and is well served by an able cast and the moody, naturalistic lighting of Zoltan Hont's crisp camera-work.
Unfortunately, his grasp on what makes a good pseudo-documentary('Blair Witch Project', 'Paranormal Activity') and what makes a bad('Cloverfield', 'Diary of the Dead') is left considerably wanting as itgradually becomes apparent that, despite the odd scare and Nell'smoments of Satanic body-popping contortions, the rear-end of thisparticular wannabe is of the feathery kind and is planted firmly in'pretender-country'.
The moc-doc format is seriously undermined with the continuous use ofcutaways in what we're supposed to believe is the spontaneous work of afilm-unit operating with a single camera. Add to this the mystifying'scary' incidental music on the soundtrack, and Stamm fully exposeshimself as a helmsman minus the courage of his convictions. Aderivative 'Blair Witch' style 'Vox-Pop' segment early on doesn't helpeither and is further evidence that inspiration and originality are invery short supply.
All these creative misdemeanours might have been forgivable had HuckBotko's and Andrew Gurland's script arrived at a suitably shocking, andsatisfying conclusion. But that's wishful thinking I'm afraid as thelast third declines at warp factor speed into a laughably nonsensical(and quite frankly, embarrassing) mash-up of 'Rosemary's Baby' 'RaceWith the Devil' and 'The Wicker Man', drowning any evidence ofcredibility and subtlety in a full-on shower of steaming Fire &Brimstone cowpats, making it a strong contender for Worst Ending of2010. In that respect alone, 'The Last Exorcism' is 'outstanding'.
As I heard a girl after the film say...''it's like Eli Roth hasattention deficit syndrome, he got bored of his own movie.'' There wasmore action and interesting scenes and 'ambiguity' in the last 10minutes than there was in the entire film. So many questions arose. Itdidn't have an abrupt, clean ending like the Blair Witch project soobviously that wasn't the effect desired. It was extremelydisappointing and it would of been satisfactory if the movie had justbeen the 5 minute trailer, at least that was gripping. In conclusion,as this was meant to be a sort of 'horror' movie and was advertised asso, I was kinda shocked to see that the only sort of audible reactionfrom the audience was laughter, then at the end the mumbled chant of''was that it?'' ''that was rubbish.''
I can't believe I watched the entire film. there wasn't a single scarybit, and the plot twist was terrible. spoiler! the fact that at the endthe girl was carrying a demon child which was then sacrificed by thecult under cover just made no sense. If they were trying to protect saiddemon child why then would they sacrifice it? zero plot development inthat direction. I'm all for surprise endings, but seriously justbringing an ending up which seems to have nothing to do with anythingdoesn't constitute a "twist" in my mind. And what was with the redboots? was it just a way to show how controlling the father was that hewouldn't allow her to have fun shoes? And I think that the priest wason a sitcom at some point. Bad acting all around, except maybe theteenage kid, he was creepy. Don't watch it. Forget it existed. Not evenworth a DVD rental.
The movie ain't that bad, but, as my title suggests it's kind of amixture of the Blair witch and the exorcist ( with some drops ofRosemary's Baby ). It may not be original, but it kept me sat still upto the very end, which means ( for me, of course ) it was kind ofinteresting. There are some good performances, I enjoyed the acting ofthe actress who played Nell and the guy who played the girl's father. There's this thing like some twenty minutes before the movie ends youpretty much know what's going to happen. I mean, one finallyunderstands what's it all about. I like terror and horror movies and, sometimes, I felt a little scared. I would recommend it, despiteranking it 6, tops. That's worth watching but it won't give you anynightmares.
A Reverend takes a crew of two to Louisiana to film him carryout anexorcism.
Director Daniel Stamm gives a polished and perfected hand-held cameraPOV film. However, Eli Roth's name has been used heavily in publicisingthe film and his producer touches are few and far between. As a fan ofHostel The Last Exorcism is disappointing.
Many elements are reminiscent of many old and new horror films and theending comes as no shock or surprise. The acting is average and is notas naturalist as you'd expect from the realistic setting. That said,Ashley Bell is creepy enough as the possessed girl, who's fineperformance is further enhanced by the great sound design and score.
Overall, the take on the trodden subject matter is just not cleverenough to standout, especially when compared to the traditionallyfilmed House of the Devil (2009) and p.o.v films for example REC (2007)& 2 (2009), which have delivered more thrills with less effort.
The Last Exorcism is in no way a bad film, but this style of filmingmaking has become competitive, common place and this Exorcism appearsmediocre and unauthentic in the crowd.
I LOVE horror movies especially exorcism movies. I have been excitedabout this movie for a long time and was completely disappointed. Icant believe this movie got made and I feel like I was cheated andtricked out of an hour and a half of my time. The movie was a joke onanyone who watched the trailer and expected an exorcism movie. Icreated an account on IMDb just to vent about this movie because I hadhigh expectations for it and it met none of them. The movie left youconfused the whole time. You didn't know if she really was possessed ornot. And in the last 11 minutes when you thought that you may actuallyget a scary part the story gives you a sucker punch to the gut andlaughs in your face. Then it ends. The story had great potential at thebeginning but it almost seemed like the writer and director couldn'tpull of a good exorcism climax for the movie so they just threw awrench in at then end and called it a day. Try a little harder nexttime.
